Skilled Care versus Home Care

Updated: Nov 12, 2021

In essence, Skilled Care are services that require the skills of a licensed professional. These licensed professionals may include Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, or licensed therapists, such as Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapists.

Skilled Care may include, but not limited to, wound care, care of drains, lines, and tubes, IV infusions, and medication injections.

On the other hand, Home Care, or sometimes referred to as Non-Skilled or Custodial services are services that do not require the skills of a licensed professional. These services may include personal care such as bathing, dressing and grooming, meal preparation, or housekeeping. These services can be given by caregivers or family members.
